Links: Photos and photography

You looking at me? Not a lot of time for blogging today, so I’ll throw out some links that are worth taking a look at. Also, I got a chance to test out the new Expodisc White Balance filter this week, at least for a few minutes, to see how it effected my shots taken in the mediocre light in my living room. Hence the photo here, shot with a 50mm 1.8D lens at f/2.2 and 1/30th second exposure.

I hope to get a chance to try it out on some of the other lenses and outdoors this weekend.

Now, for some links:

I also spend a lot of time as of late looking around on fredmiranda.com to see photos that other have taken, reading the forums for tips, and just drooling over the camera gear some of those guys use. Keep in mind that a lot of the people posting shots there are professionals and are often shooting with $5,000-8,000 dollar lenses mounted on $5,000 cameras. Their results are what often remind the rest of us that we are amateurs.  =)

Just check out the forums there, and learn from some really amazing photographers.

Again, toooooooo much to know! Too much to think about! I say you just take the picture with auto settings and then do the Amelie or Dooce effect in photoshop:

Color correct/play with curves to make the picture nice.

Dupe the picture layer.

For the Dooce effect, blur by 5 pixels, set the layer to multiply and lighten in whatever method you like.

For Amelie, set the layer to overlay, then go to color balance and set the tone balance to highlights and the balance to 5, -20, -100.

Boom! Great picture and people who don’t know what photoshop is think you’re some kind of pro!

Of course, everyone who knows anything about photography will still think you’re a hack, but that’s something I’m okay with! =-)

Well, I am having to learn more than I normally would. With people wanting me to shoot their weddings and do family portraits, I’m trying to make sure I can put out a quality “product”.

Besides, the more you know, the easier it is to become the Pope. Oh wait, that’s something else….
